Getting new teams performing together, fast

London 2012 Organising Committee

The organisers of the canoe events at the London 2012 Olympics faced a challenge. How to pull together multi-national teams to deliver the events at Lee Valley and Eton Dorney, knowing that the eyes of the world would be watching and they absolutely had to be right first time. If ever teams were going to perform under pressure, this was it. They turned to us for help.

So how did it work?

Jonathan and William responded by designing and facilitating launch workshops for the key staff on the two teams. Although only a day long, the workshops enabled team members to quickly understand their roles, build their working relationships and agree on their priorities, as well as sharing experiences of the Olympic environment. The fact that some team members weren’t in the country was no barrier either – we used Skype to make sure that they could take part and be heard.

The results

Despite the pressure of the Olympics, the teams delivered the slalom and sprint events to widespread acclaim from athletes, the public, LOCOG and television broadcasters.
