Exuberance in sport and life

Much of my work as a sport psych helps athletes to really get to grips with their routines, to control their focus and eliminate distractions. It’s very effective, and the ability to zone in at will, is extremely powerful. Watching the Masters last weekend also reminded me that every athlete must have their own innate routine that matches the strengths of their personality and brings out the reason why they do the sport in the first place.

Angel Cabrera reminded me of the sheer exuberance that some sports people bring, a vitality that must not be bottled or reduced into a formula. To me he appeared utterly in the moment, fluid, a smile never too far from his face. Perhaps easier when you already have two majors to your name! Adam Scott represents the more systematic approach to golf, to my eyes first demonstrated so powerfully when Faldo changed his swing from the willowy to the metronomic, and all the success that followed.
